What Is Somatic Experiencing — And Why It's So Powerful For Purity Culture Healing

In this post I want to break it down in plain language — what Somatic Experiencing is, how it works, and why I use it as one of my primary approaches with women healing from purity culture.

What Is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based approach to trauma healing developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It emerged from Levine's observation that animals in the wild — despite regularly facing life-threatening situations — rarely develop lasting trauma responses. They shake, tremble, and complete their stress responses naturally after a threatening event, and then return to baseline.

Humans, however, often cannot do this. We interrupt our natural stress responses — sometimes because the threat is ongoing, sometimes because completing the response (like running, fighting, or shaking) felt dangerous or socially unacceptable. When this happens, the energy of the interrupted response gets stored in the body — creating the physical and emotional symptoms we recognize as trauma.

Somatic Experiencing works by gently helping the body complete these interrupted responses — releasing stored trauma energy and allowing the nervous system to return to a natural state of regulation.

How Is Somatic Experiencing Different From Talk Therapy?

Traditional talk therapy primarily engages the thinking brain — the neocortex. You talk about your experiences, develop insight and understanding, and process your story in relationship with your therapist.

Somatic Experiencing primarily engages the body and the lower brain structures — the limbic system and brainstem — where trauma is actually stored. Rather than talking about what happened, we track what is happening right now in your body.

This distinction matters enormously for purity culture healing. Because purity culture trauma — the shame, the disconnection, the automatic responses that flood your system in intimate moments — lives in the body and the nervous system. It cannot be fully reached through talking alone.

What Does a Somatic Experiencing Session Actually Look Like?

Many women ask me what SE actually looks like in practice. Here is what you can expect:

Slowing Down
SE sessions move at a much slower pace than traditional talk therapy. We are not trying to cover as much ground as possible. We are tracking subtle shifts in your body — and that requires time and attention.

Tracking Sensation
I might ask you questions like: "As you notice that thought, what do you feel in your body?" or "Where do you feel that in your body right now?" We are building your capacity to notice and stay with physical sensation without judgment.

Working With Pendulation
Rather than diving straight into the most difficult material, SE uses a technique called pendulation — moving back and forth between areas of activation and areas of ease or neutrality in your body. This prevents your system from becoming overwhelmed and builds your capacity to process gradually.

Noticing Impulses and Movements
Sometimes the body wants to make a small movement — a shift in posture, a breath, a subtle gesture. In SE, we slow these down and let them complete. Often these small movements are the body beginning to discharge stored responses.

Building Resources
We also spend significant time building what are called resources — places, memories, sensations, or images that feel genuinely supportive and settling to your nervous system. These become anchors you can return to when processing gets activating.

Why Somatic Experiencing Is So Powerful For Purity Culture Healing Specifically

Purity culture creates a very specific kind of nervous system response — one where the body learned to shut down, disconnect, or flood with shame in response to sexual feeling or intimate connection.

Somatic Experiencing is uniquely suited to healing this because:

It works directly with the body's learned shutdown responses
The disconnection, numbness, and dissociation that purity culture often creates are nervous system responses. SE works directly with these — gently approaching areas of shutdown and helping the body slowly, safely begin to come back online.

It rebuilds the body-self relationship
One of the most profound effects of purity culture is the severing of a woman's relationship with her own body. SE rebuilds this relationship slowly and safely — helping you develop trust in your own physical experience and sensation.

It doesn't require retelling your story
For many women, retelling the details of their purity culture experience is re-activating rather than healing. SE allows us to work with the trauma without requiring you to narrate every detail of what happened.

It works with shame at the physiological level
Shame has a very specific physiological signature — collapse, heat, the impulse to hide or disappear. SE works with these physical components of shame directly, helping the body find a different response.
